A Wizards Mistake

The Wizards Mistake

Chapter One

The Capture

It started on a very droughts day, his Mother baking pies for dinner, his Father in the market trading meats. It was to be a splendid afternoon. Rarely was it when they ate together at all.

His Father paid servants to prepare his meals, and didn’t spend much time with his only son. The Father was usually busy in the court. The boy’s Father was powerful, and although the boy wasn’t exposed to his Fathers professions, it was a matter of time.

His Mother was usually sick, unable to move, and occupied. Always busy to take care of the boy, even at an early age. She busied her self in gossip, and rarely saw to it that her boy was well.

As you can see, this boy was looking forward to this night much more than anything. He was told to go play in the woods, and then be home at pre afternoon.

So he gathered his belongings, packed them, in his rich silk pack.

He knew these woods, so well; he could walk around with his eyes closed. (He proved this to his friends.) The woods were part of their property. They were rather large and full of livestock.

He sat at his favorite stump, and dreamed of the good night to come. He had brought his favorite items, a knife, sharpened to a nice sharp edge, an apple to snack on, then a nice shiny dark thermometer.

He didn’t know how to work it but it was nice and expensive. That’s what he like the most. His father had given it to him at eight years old. His mother screamed when she found out, but his father silenced her, as he guided her to their room.

Ever since then he carried it everywhere. Only once was he caught with it by a stranger on the road, but never again.

Fiddling with his items, and thinking of tonight past time rather quickly.

He gathered everything, threw his apple core into the woods at random, heaved himself up, and ran at first, then decided to walk after panting for several minutes.

In a matter of minutes he reached the cottage. Then the sight made him gasp, His beloved home smothered in flames. He rushed forward, but a grip on his shoulder stopped him.

“What we have here”, said a greasy, bald man,” He’s fat, the cannibals will eat him”

The boy was fast at thinking, but couldn’t run at all.” I can read!” He yelled.

The man ignored this, and looked around.

“This is government property, the man inside was the Kerchief, his wife was inside too, which means this runt is their son.” A slow smile tingled on his lips.” How much do you thinks he’s worth, asked one of the men behind him.

“A mere chackle, if were lucky”, said the bald one, but his voice was disappointed.

Chapter Two

The Cannibals

The boy had little experience with cannibals, but he had read with his father, that they had gathered and killed mercilessly for their benefits, such as food, fresh water, and items.

They did not live in luxury, and the government had sent raids to all of their locations, and there were few left. The boy had brown fair hair, straight nose, plump cheeks, and overweight. He had been under his fathers teaching.

One thing he learned was that cannibals, or The Cannibi as they call themselves, were a rough bunch, but only people in The Cannibi, are allowed to follow their unknowable religion. The Cannibi hunted down humans not in their group, and killed them. Then they processed them into meat.

It was a horrible thing to do, and the government had funded many raids and hunting of the horrible group.

But there were outsiders who sold the Cannibi Thousands of humans every month.

The tri of men who had tied and knotted the boy, were these outsiders. So he listened as they put him in their cart and took off.

“A mere a chackle” asked the younger man,” We should just keep as a slave”

“With all that fat” yelled the bald one,” No, we sell him, anyway every time we pass guards they’ll get suspicious” The words obviously stung the other two men, for they spoke no more.

The journey was hard, and when they had reached the uninhabitable woods they made him walk alongside the horses.

They traveled for a week. The older one was nicer, but equally cruel as the bald one, and the younger one. He handed him scraps, small and unsatisfying, but better than nothing.

The boy began growing fit, and losing his fat, but if they sold him it wouldn’t matter.

As they neared the Grand Market, a large but illegal area where everything was sold, they didn’t bother putting him in the cart. Two soldiers saw them coming, one putting up his hand and taking a step forward.

“Halt! What business do you have here?”

“Only to merely sell goods,” said the bald one, his voice changed much more, full of flattering,” Why else would we come.

But the guard wasn’t flattered,” What goods?” The boy was stunned the guard didn’t even glance at him.” We won’t allow anything inhuman, explosive, or infections,” he said this formally and his face was grim.

“Only this chubby boy here”, said the older one.

The guard finally looked at him,” Very, well, continue on.”

Of course, the boy thought, they allow slavery here, but the guard hadn’t asked them what they intended to do with him.

The city was marvelous, and he would have enjoyed it hadn’t a rope been tied to his neck. He saw all sorts, from salted nut, to juices of every kind, to blades and daggers sharper than a snakes fangs, and finally potions.

They walked for an hour until they reached another wall, but this one had just one guard and he looked menacing.” Halt! Name of what you’re selling, and to whom!” Finally these men will be revealed!

“This boy will be sold to the Cannibi,’He looked at the guards face, but there was no emotion.

“Continue on”

The gate opened and they continued onward. His arms were tied, was there any escape? He fought the ropes tied to his arms. The older one rushed forward, and grabbed his neck. He expected the feeling of choking, but the man bent his face and whispered,” Run, slit our throats if you have to, but get back into the outer gates, he slid a knife, and a sack of coins in his pocket.

The man walked back to the cart, the boys hands untied. He bolted as fast as he could past the cart and to the gate. The gate opened as he ran, and a man in a cloak walked forward, He saw the boy approach and muttered something, he felt a force rush him.

Then the helping force stopped him. He stood right beside the man. The face was smooth, and clean.” Who are you boy?”

I replied breathing hard,” I’m Henry, the son of Kerchief, and am being chased by human traders!”

Chapter Three

The Wizard

The man was startled;” You are the son of the Kerchief!”

“But the Kerchief is lost in the Forbidden Woods of Darkness, hunting down Courth of The Chartless Table!”

The boy was confused,” My father is dead, so is my mother, killed by those human traders!” The tri of men were rushing after him, their eyes wide and angry.

The man finally looked at the human traders, and gasped,” By the Government, it’s Courth!” The man said something unknowledgeable and sent flames at the tri.

The tri wasn’t expecting this and only the bald one jumped out of the fiery path. The other two burned alive and screamed to their deaths.”Courth, you dare show your face to public! You deserve a thousand deaths! And I intend to give it!

“Koulduyt”, the man yelled, whilst the same time Courth yelled,”Herelyt!”

The spells connected and Courth’s failed to protect him. The spell hit him squarely in the chest. He died, died, and was to face another nine-hundred-ninety-eight deaths.

A crowd had gathered and some were horrified, some amused, some laughing.

“You said your name was Henry?” the wizard asked,” Mine is Velerth.”

“Indeed, my name is Henry”, I said looking up into Velerth’s eyes.

“Come with me, I’ll bring you forth the government, they’ll decide your fate.”

Chapter Four

The Government

He had heard rumors, gossip, and read many books on the government, but only knew for certain, that it was a large city full of scribes, federal workers, and only one Leader.

Currently that leaders name is Jurgath, and he was the power fullest person on Thaftheg, talking men-wise. There were other powerful leaders, but they didn’t challenge the government.

“How far is it?” Henry’s feet were sore from the weeks travel from before, and the Velerth was traveling by feet.

“Not far at all, actually, a matter of minutes. Grab my hand.” He instructed.

With a whirl of colors, Henry fell in a heap, and regurgitated, and got up. Velerth obviously was used to this method of traveling.

They had come to a garden, but the sky was dark, and everything seemed unhappy. They walked the trail, which led them to the tremendous wall. The wall was made of slabs of stone, and was cheaply made.

Velerth said a command, and the gate slid open soundlessly. He had stridden into the dark insides of the City.

“Come, Henry, we don’t have much time.”

Henry rushed alongside Velerth and asked” Is this where my father worked?”

Velerth looked grave, and replied” No, your father hated this city more than anything else, he worked with this city, but never inside.”

“Why did he hate this city? “Henry asked curious.

“For reasons I never asked.”

As they walked it gradually grew colder, and Henry started shivering.

Velerth saw this, and did a warming spell around them.

“Forget every time”, he muttered cross with him self.

They drew near a door, and Velerth simply grabbed the door handle and twisted.

A chorus of voices ran out,” Welcome” But it was a stony welcome

“Kindly please remove the heat spell Vll” said one of the group.

The group sat along a circle, surrounding him and Velerth.

It suddenly grew colder, as Velerth removed the spell.

“Henry, son of Kerchief, grandson of Gulkor, and Great-grandson of Tigyforikuoljh, you have come forth today before this council, to decide your fate, as it is no longer in your Fathers hands.”

“As your Father agreed, we take these actions, necessary, in order to keep a clean, straight, and satisfying government.”

“We offer schooling until the age of eighteen of any choice. We also will keep you fed and clothed as a thank you to Your Father; you will receive Your Fathers will at the age of eighteen as well.”

“We are sorry about your Fathers death, but are curious as why Your Father ignored his duties, as Kerchief, and as our savior of Thaftheg. We recorded his absence as lost, but it will be changed, he will receive his pay for being harmed by his work. Dismissed! They all got up, and walked up to the exits along the circular room.

“Just out of curiosity, what subject will you take?” asked Velerth.

“I don’t know any”, Henry shrugged, frowning.

Velerth smiled,” If you take wizardry I’d be the teacher.”

“I’m not sure”, Henry was troubled, as this was all too fast.

“Take your time later Henry, food is about to be served.”

So they together they exited the way they had came.

Chapter Five

TheSchoolofWizardry

The meals in the dining hall were meager, but filling never less.  They consisted of: A spoon, a fork, a meat, a vegetable, and a fruit. There was wine on some occasions, but for adults. There was spring water for the youth. As Henry entered, he expected talking, laughter, or even whispers, but it was deathly quite.

Henry sat, next to Velerth, at one of the long table. They were like picnic table, except longer and made of stone, not wood. He looked forward hoping that the residents were friendly. He had a couple of friends at home, or what was left, but the friends parents were paid well.

He caught the attention of one of the staff. The staff member was tall, lean, and had exercised hands. He must teach sorcery, thought Henry.  He had a grimace as though he was in pain. He drank from a silver skull.

Sorcery was banned until the governments decided to make it legal for “Government Officials” and are allowed to practice and use such methods. There were many outbreaks of rebellious attempts to use it.

These acts did not last long for it resulted in death, misery, and pain. This of course stopped them short. Anyone who was caught was sentenced to death.

The Sorcerer stood abruptly and glared for attention. People noticed immediately and were silenced.

“This is the Seventh Day of this term. I’m sure you are well acquainted of your classes and duties as student. “Am I right”, the pale man asked, his voice deathly dangerous. It would be idiotic to say no to his question.

A chorus of “Yes Sir” went through the crowd of youths. They were obviously used to his statements. He must be strict. He already knew sorcery was off his list.  If he was taught by another teacher, he just might take the class.

“You know where your rooms await you,” he sneered. “If you don’t then you must find out!”

“Are all the staff as strict as him?” Henry whispered to Velerth.

He smiled and responded,” Am I a staff member?”” Or should I say am I strict?”

He smiled back.” So you teach wizardry?” Is it easier than sorcery?”

“Oh no, not at all, you see sorcery is a link or tap to an unseen immense source of power at your fingertips. It’s easier to use forces of nature instead of bending and reshaping an object. Wizardry is simple but a little bit more hazardous.”

With that thought Henry followed the trickle of youths leaving the hall. He wondered what he was supposed to sleep on. But he just decided to pick an uninhabited bed and dresser to use.

The dorms or sleeping rooms were neither luxurious nor poorly. Its walls were Baby Blue, bare and unfurnished. As he walked in There was a clatter and chatter of the youths talking. He was reasonably glad that they did talk, for he was afraid that they didn’t.

He chose a bed, put his clothes away and lay down. He hadn’t had a real bed since when he was at home. It stilled pained him to think of their death. He could not avenge their death for Velerth had already slain the very ones who did it.

Just the thought made his stomach clench. He had many worries without his parents.

His bed was not poor but furnished with nice silk blankets and sheets and an assortments of pillows. He realized that they were used, but didn’t mind for they were rich and that’s what mattered. Sleep quickly consumed his needy body.

Chapter Six

The Test

The Government would like you to realize that as part of the administration and to have the ability to learn new skills you must first take a test. This is to realize your potential skill, and hopefully get to understand where you stand in you academic skills.

Thank You,

The Administration and other Offices in the Government

This letter was on his little desk next to his bed in the morning. His heart started beating as he realized what it meant. He wasn’t very enlightened with skills. It didn’t help with his over weight problem. He had, he supposed, lost considerable weight since his parent’s death, but it wasn’t a large improvement.

I understand what you mean, and will try my best on this test. But I can’t help but notice that you didt mention a time and place. Plese tell, me these and Ill try to attend.

He wrote this on the back of the letter; His hopes were that the person who set it there would take it back and would understand. But he stopped and gasped as the ink in the letter dissolved, and started forming a new letter.

We understand that you are new to this system, do not be alarmed. To tell you, you must be in the testing room (1232) by 3:00.   We also would like you to take an additional class on spelling and grammar. These are decisions made by the Greta Council. We also would advise you to take you r First week slowly and not to be alarmed by “Differences and Impossible things” take time to ask, and we’ll take time to answer.

Thank You,

The Government, Greta Council, Education for a Better Tomorrow, Testing Faculty, and Other Offices.

He could not be helped to be startled by the sudden appearance of the letter it didn’t seem likely and there were so many offices and other offices. Greta brought back memories from his father. He remembered him mentioning that the “Greta” were a severe educational office that enforced learning upon highly paid by rich parents. He realized that his father’s money was probably being wasted by paying the Greta. He furiously scribbled on the letter again.

I feel like I’m being cheated out of my father’s money, I would like the Greta to step out of my educational learnin. Please let me decide these things.

Again the letters dissolved, and formed a completely different latter, which meant his furious scribbles from both times disappeared too.

You have no rights over your father’s money. You have no right to tell the Government what they can and can’t do. The Greta has decided what is best for you. The Government is being more than generous. Do not bring the Terasis Office into this.

Be Careful,

The Government, Terasis Office, Greta, Testing Faculty, Dean Personal, Correctional Facility, and Other Offices.

His anger dissolved in a flash. He realized that he didn’t want to pick a fight with the Government even if they tried to trick the money out of him. He would go to Velerth and ask him what to do.

He rushed and quickly dressed. His clothes were stained and travel worn. He would have to get new ones or severely wash them. No matter what he was to do to them they would forever remain soiled for it was a lost cause.

He hurried into the hall past the rousing students and sprinted to the room (1232). As he walked in he sighed many teachers. They looked disgruntled and many were looking impatient.

“So he finally shows himself”, a young teacher screams.”You’ve no idea the commotion you caused do you!”

“Now, now, Heratea, they boy is just a small pest”, sneered  the tall sorceres.” You try to defy the administration, and they thank you by letting the students take the week off.”

Velerth stood to the side and numbly scratched his head.”Well it could’ve been worse.”

“You meerly protect this scum, because you were his father’s main servant!” He spat.

Hurt crossed Velerths face, but dissapeared, as he said,”Let us carry on.”

“Your simply going to go through a series of tests to decide what your going to take as your main academic skill, whilst doing writing, as you’ve been told by the Greta. Now you’ll be doing Potions first with Ms. Schoier, Swordery with Mr. Flank, Sorcery with Mr. Loith, and finally Wizadry with Me, or Mr. Poiet.”

“Please follow me, so we can do your test”, said Ms. Schoier.

” I would have thought there would be more subjects”, asked Henry.

“Oh, trust me my dear there are thousands of subjects, but the Greta gave you these choices, and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to go through all that testing, I’m sure.”

Henry felt another rush of boiling anger toward the Greta.

Five-card draw

In casino play the first betting round begins with the player to the left of the big blind, and subsequent rounds begin with the player to the dealer’s left. Home games typically use an ante; the first betting round begins with the player to the dealer’s left, and the second round begins with the player who opened the first round.

Play begins with each player being dealt five cards, one at a time, all face down. The remaining deck is placed aside, often protected by placing a chip or other marker on it. Players pick up the cards and hold them in their hands, being careful to keep them concealed from the other players, then a round of betting occurs.

If more than one player remains after the first round, the “draw” phase begins. Each player specifies how many of their cards they wish to replace; up to three cards total; and discards them. The deck is retrieved, and each player is dealt in turn from the deck the same number of cards they discarded so that each player again has five cards.

A second “after the draw” betting round occurs beginning with the player to the dealer’s left or else beginning with the player who opened the first round (the latter is common when antes are used instead of blinds). This is followed by a showdown if more than one player remains, in which the player with the best hand wins the pot.

A magical (or “Magykal,” as it’s spelled in Angie Sage’s book) world, about to fall to a dark lord, with only one boy able to save it… No, it’s not another Harry Potter book, though the similarities are a little striking. It’s Magyk, the first of the “Septimus Heap” books by Angie Sage. In Sage’s novel for young readers, Septimus is the seventh son of a seventh son, who legend holds will become a powerful wizard capable of defeating the Darke Magyk that threatens the land. Unfortunately, Septimus is captured at birth and his parents, Silas and Sarah Heap, are told he is dead. The same night, Silas discovers a newborn baby girl in the woods and brings her into the Heap household as their own child.

Ten years later, it comes to light that the infant girl, now named Jenna, is not just any girl: she is the daughter of the late Queen, next in line to inherit the throne. The Queenling, as she is called, is confused about her newfound identity, but she doesn’t have much time to think about it – the Darke magician DomDaniel has returned and wants to reclaim his place as ExtraOrdinary Wizard. The current ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand, knows she needs to get the Queenling out of the Heap household and into safety. With the help of Silas, Nicko Heap, the wolfhound Maxie, and an unwilling Young Army officer known only as Boy 412, Marcia and Jenna go on the run from the Darke Magyk and DomDaniel.

Though at first Magyk seems to be mirroring the more famous Harry Potter books, most of the story is very original and readers will soon forget about the other boy wizard. That is, they’ll forget about him until they reach two points in the book where Sage strangely uses two of the same names used in the Potter books. Jenna’s pet rock is named Petroc Trelawney (there is a Professor Trelawney in the Potter books) and a swamp creature is called a Boggart (the boggart in Harry Potter is a nightmarish shapeshifter). As Magyk was published years after the Potter books in which these names appear, it appears that either Sage used them on purpose or that she unwittingly did it because she was unaware of their occurrences in the Potter books. Two simple name changes would have cleared this up and made the book that more enjoyable. **

Aside from this, Magyk is a fast-moving and touching book with plenty of adventure, creatures, charms, spells and bad guys to keep both children and adults interested. Though you don’t get to know the characters as well as you do in the Potter books, there is more action, to keep you turning the pages. Charms and spells are capitalized and written in a different font, making it easier for youngsters to recognize them and also lending a magical quality to the book itself.

Whether they are fans of Harry Potter or not, young readers, young adults and adults should enjoy Magyk and be interested enough to follow the adventures of Septimus Heap and the other characters in Sage’s subsequent books. Let’s just hope that Sage refrains from utilizing any more Harry Potter names and confusing her readers further.

** EDITOR’S NOTE: British author Phil Knight notes that

The Petroc Trelawney in the Septimus Heap books is nothing at all to do with Professor Trelawney. He is a Radio 3 presenter who may well be known to Angie Sage personally, but otherwise will be known over the air. Think: why would Jenna call a pet rock ‘Trelawney’? To a Radio 3 listener like me, it’s perfectly logical… And as to Boggarts, they’ve been around here in the North of England for a long time. Manchester has Boggart Hole Clough, for example. They’re not really like either Sage’s or Rowling’s creatures, but pre-exist either of them.
